Bristol launching Clear Air Zone

Air pollution affects everyone in Bristol where a major source of air pollution in cities is road traffic, particularly diesel engines.

Toxic air pollution contributes to 300 deaths a year in Bristol, where the Bristol City Council has a legal and moral duty to reduce pollution as quickly as possible. So, Bristol will be launching the Clean Air Zone on 28th November 2022, where charges will apply. The government has directed Bristol and other cities to do this which will help to improve air quality by reducing harmful levels of air pollution caused by traffic.

Over 71% of vehicles travelling into Bristol already meet the zone's emission standards. Only older and more polluting vehicles will be charged. In the future the amount should increase as more people take advantage of incentives and available financial support to switch to a cleaner vehicle. As a guide charges will not apply to:

  • Euro 4, 5 and 6 petrol vehicles, approx. 2006 upwards

  • Euro 6 diesel vehicles, approx. end of 2015 onwards

  • Fully electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

  • Modified or retrofitted vehicles registered with the Energy Saving Trust's Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS)

  • Motorbikes

This money will be reinvested back into the local community, supporting individuals and businesses to switch to cleaner vehicles and the introduction of green public transport. The zone and its boundary were determined based on how to meet air quality targets in the central area where air quality is worst in the shortest possible time. It will also help to encourage drivers and businesses to update their vehicles, change their route or think twice about their journey and do they really need to make it.

It's always reassuring to know that AutoLyne's fleet of cars, vans and minibuses comply with Euro Standards, and that they can guide you on the best environmentally-friendly solutions.
